June 21 2023, Booked, Not Booked
Sometimes this happens, but my June 21st (National Indigenous People's Day) gig just got cancelled and the date is up for grabs, first come first booked!
It happens. It happens more than anyone wants to talk about. Dates get booked, and for any number of reasons, they get cancelled.
Here we are today.
The organizer I had booked my date with didn’t have the budget they thought they did, and they’ve had to cut back on celebration costs - it happens, I get it.
So I’m available June 21, 2023.
YOU DON’T OPPRESS ME MUCH
You Don’t Oppress Me Much is my signature live style - irreverent, boundary-pushing, fast-paced, and honest reflections on the failure of reconciliation, Canada’s dance with colonization, key takeaways from the Covid pandemic, and a deep dive into the wind, the miracle of music, and territorial acknowledgements.
The show is in previews right now and will be the show I tour this Fall. It’s funny and sharp, I can’t wait to share it with you all!
KEYNOTES. PRESENTATIONS. WORKSHOPS.
Wreck-On Silly Nation - take the pulse of reconciliation with Ryan McMahon including best practices, a collection of eye roll-inducing reconciliation faux pas, and where we might go next with the movement given the challenges in front of the country in 2023.
Home On Native Land - Home On Native Land is a self-guided course about Indigenous justice in Canada. In this presentation, you take the course live with me. The website is a fantastic resource for learners. It allows people to work at their own speed. We tried to keep the material light yet grounded in fact (I mean, I was working with a bunch of lawyers, trust me, this shit is locked airtight in terms of facts and figures). Through ten videos, cartoons & lessons, we've put an Indigenous lens on matters of history and justice. Visit the website to learn more.
John Wayne Is Dead - Indigenous People in North America are one of the world’s most misunderstood groups. This is changing thanks to Indigenous storytellers, media makers, writers, comedians, and other misfit artists committed to sharing their truths. McMahon reflects on his 20-year career and shares how the Indigenous narrative sovereignty movement has caught hold as Indigenous creatives take back our lives one story at a time.
No NDN Act, Act NDN - Considered one of the most harmful pieces of legislation ever created in Canada, the impact of the Indian Act cannot be overlooked or overstated - it is racist. It has devastating consequences in the lives of Indigenous People today. In this keynote, Ryan takes you in and out of the past, present, and future of the Indian Act and how we might be able to move away from it to create better futures for Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Toward 2167 - Drawing on the many lessons learned during Canada 150, This presentation aims to provide a statement of facts for Canada. It borrows from key findings of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Final Report, the National Inquiry into Missing. Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls final report and various Indigenous-produced texts, readings, and reports will provide a nuanced and accessible understanding of where this country has been and where it might be able to go next.
